Fear of Flying

Seeing as we are winding up for the Rugby World Cup I thought it was worth commenting on the following story……

Romania’s star player, Catalin Fercu could not overcome his fear of flying (they called it travel sickness) to make the 40hr trip to New Zealand – poor guy must be gutted.

Once again its Snow Day on Monday!!!

Imagine you were trying to fly out of Dunedin or Queenstown today for your long awaited holiday in the sun.  Would your insurance policy cover you for the alterations to your tickets or your rebooking on to another tour because the airport is closed?? Check the insurance cover provided by Mike Henry and one other travel insurance provider and enter your findings on the blog.

Before Wednesday, you need to look at the wiki activities under travel insurance and complete scenarios 1-4 and the quotations under ‘Policy Content’.  Please ensure you complete this work as we are getting behind in the scheduled classes now.

Transport in Europe

Florence - parking your scooter

I know its not a coach, or train but only the humble scooter. This form of transport is very popular in Europe – France and Italy and boy are they crazy drivers. Another advantage is that they are cheaper to run than a car and easier to park.

Monday 08 August – Class

There will be no class at Polytech of Monday but you will be expected to complete the following work. We have been learning about land transportation worldwide and particularly about coach and rail travel.

* Task One
Please visit a travel agency (not in one group!!) and select a brochure which includes a coach, rail or cruise holiday you would be interested in reserving for yourself. When you come to class on Wednesday be prepared to tell the class all the information on the holiday and why they should book the same holiday.

*Task Two
On a map of Australia, show all the rail routes and name the journeys.

*Task Three

Name the main cruise areas of the world (at least four) e.g. Mediterranean and two cruise companies who operate in each area. Support information on I drive.
Name four other types of water transportation used by tourists.

Site Visits

Yesterday we visited to accommodation sites in Dunedin: YHA in Stafford St and Scenic Circle Hotel. Thanks to our great guides, Julie and Kate. Students then completed a compare and contrast exercise in class answering such things as: Which clients each property would suit, job roles, terminology, customer requirements and info they would need from clients before suggesting a suitable property for them to stay in.

For next week guys would you bring a news/magazine article relating to tourism to class (Monday).

A travel agency is a business that sells travel related products and services, particularly package tours, to end-user customers on behalf of third party travel suppliers, such as airlines, hotels, tour companies, and cruise lines. In addition to dealing with ordinary tourists, most travel agents have a special department devoted to travel arrangements for business travellers, while some agencies specialise in commercial and business travellers. Some agencies also serve as general service agents for foreign travel companies in different countries Wikipedia: Travel_agency August 2007

Today is the beginning of this course and the continuation of skills and knowledge building around the role of travel agent/consultant and what would be expected of you within a travel agency

We and that is we will be using the blog during the course. Today I will invite you all to join as contributors and after each class session will expect you to either create a post or place a comment on this blog – we will discuss “blog manners” in class.

Our first task however is to look at a Lynn’s blog. She is currently in Shanghai and has been writing about her experience so far – its great reading and I encourage you to take a look and post a comment or two. http://lbrandham.wordpress.com/ Before you can do this you must create your own account in wordpress – we will go over this.

On Wednesday we will be visiting the YHA Hostel in Stafford St and the Scenic Circle Hotel in Princess St. You will be expected to wear similar clothes to those you wore for roleplays (interviews) in the first semester.  Anyone not dressed correctly will not take part in the tour.  Can you also wear your name badges. If you have a problem with this see me .

Thanks
